Running a Devon internet promoting agency it is sometimes tempting to automatically hate things that seem to put a nail in the coffin of old school website development – you know – doing things all bespoke, doing it the ‘right way’.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m just finishing off a really nice bespoke site for a customer and, for this client, getting something off-the-shelf would be wrong.
They need a strong online identity, they need something that they can call their own and they want to be able to show to their bosses and shareholders that they are with the times and mean business.
For this client a template is not sufficient and anything short of bespoke is well, just not fitting. They have their requirements my job is to meet those needs and exceed their expectancies by putting 1 or 2 cherries and a little bit of glitter on top and you know what, I’m more than pleased to oblige.
I also have another customer whio is a local tradesman, great at what he does and a very nice man to go with it. He has loads of competition for his services locally and while he’s not really the most design or brand conscious person the world has ever seen, he does realise that he has to be seen in search engine results pages or his competitors will pick up business that he has the right to vie for.
For customer number 2, bespoke is over the top. He’s a builder, he does not care to look polished and slick, it just isn’t his style.
So what am I doing for our friendly builder? Well, I am not attempting to make him out to be something he isn’t, people like his rough charm and that character should come through in his internet site.
What’s design solution? Gulp, it is Yola and not only is it Yola it’s also free Yola which doesn’t even permit you sub menus!
At this point I am not acting like a web designer, I’m acting like a good high value local marketing specialist. Regardless of if the site is well, on the basic side, the off and on page SEO will rock and to use a local workmen’s saying; “At the end of the day, it’s not pretty but it is job done! “.
